JOB NO: 222,952SB2

A progressive, privately owned practice in North Canterbury has a current vacancy for a full-time mixed veterinarian to join the team.

This role would suit a vet with a strong interest in dairy work. Applications are welcome from standout new graduates and experienced vets.

The practice operates across four clinics, each with its own focus. The role is based at the practice’s dairy hub and is designed around an approximate 80% large animal and 20% companion animal split. The large animal work has a strong dairy focus, with the team servicing around 90 dairy farms, where the average herd size is approximately 950 cows. There is also the opportunity to gain experience across sheep and beef, equine and deer work, depending on your interests.

The clinic handles the majority of the practice’s dairy work, as well as some beef, sheep, deer and equine cases, along with routine and emergency companion animal work. Facilities in this well-equipped clinic include X-ray, ultrasound, full surgical capability, two consult rooms and IDEXX in-house pathology.

The successful applicant will be joining a team of 14 vets, two nurses and a large animal technician team. This is a genuinely supportive, social and fun team, with experienced vets, nurses and technicians working together across the practice.

The team places a strong focus on developing both technical skills and softer skills, including communication, client relationships and confidence in practice. Supportive mentoring and professional development are available, with flexibility to tailor the caseload around your interests where possible.

The on-call roster is for large animal work only. Outside of spring calving, on-call averages around 1:6 to 1:8. During spring calving, the roster is around 1:4, with additional resources allocated to help cover the workload. The role generally includes one weeknight on call per fortnight and one weekend on call approximately every two months.

On offer for the successful candidate is a competitive salary, medical insurance, a work vehicle provided with a full kit, supportive mentoring and professional development, and flexibility to shape the role around your clinical interests.

The location offers a classic Kiwi lifestyle with easy access to some of the Canterbury region’s best outdoor attractions. It is around 1.5 hours from Christchurch. The area is ideal for those who enjoy hiking, fishing, camping and skiing. It’s an active, outdoorsy community that offers a relaxed regional lifestyle while still being within reach of larger centres.
