JOB NO: 221,606SB2

With three locations in regional Queensland, including a newly opened large animal hospital and breeding facility, this practice is growing its team, and they want to hear from you!

This is a leadership opportunity for an experienced equine vet. The practice owner would like to employ a vet who can help provide learning support to other staff members as the season workload expands.

In the equine off-season, the practice sees a growing number of clients wanting cattle services, including preg testing, herd health management and bull testing. This opportunity is primarily a large animal/equine role. However, there is plenty of small animal work to go around, so the ratio is your choice!

You will be joining a team that is dynamic, innovative and has an amazing culture. This practice has a high staff retention rate, and there is a solid foundation of staff members who have been at the practice long-term, allowing excellent training and consistency in delivering high-quality service.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to be in charge of running your own breeding season in a team environment where the workload is shared. You will have a diverse, friendly and talented vet team to discuss cases with. You will have the opportunity to work alongside an experienced employer with expertise in dermatology, medicine, ultrasound, orthopaedics and reproduction. The practice follows a nurse-led consultation model with their highly trained nursing team. There is a 2:1 ratio of nurses to vets.

This multi-site practice has a brand new large animal hospital and breeding centre (including a mobile vet). The purpose-built hospital features top-of-the-line diagnostic equipment, crushes, stables and paddocks on 70 acres of rural bliss. It offers cattle and equine ambulatory services, equine breeding services and bull and pregnancy testing.

The large animal equipment includes a temperature-controlled laboratory, high-powered microscopes, brand new ultrasound and x-ray equipment, brand new custom Killahy stables, equine procedure crush & reproduction crush with foal box, cattle crush and yards, outdoor day yards, truck ramp and two indoor ICU stables with camera monitoring. There are facilities and equipment for all breeding services, including AI (fresh, frozen, chilled), embryo transfers, stallion collection and agistment.

There are also two fully equipped mobile vet trucks that travel to clients and patients across central Queensland.

The employers value the team as their number one priority. They take pride in nurturing an incredible workplace culture and providing all of the staff members with a work-life balance to suit.

This is a permanent full-time role with a four-day workweek. The on-call roster is 1 in 6 weekends, including 1 night per week. The after-hours workload will increase during breeding season, and it is shared between all vets.

Key responsibilities:

– Execute and help lead the team into equine breeding success

– Conduct thorough examinations of animals and diagnose health issues.

– Perform surgeries and medical procedures as necessary.

– Develop treatment plans and follow up on patient progress.

– Educate pet owners on preventive care, nutrition, and overall animal health.

– Maintain accurate medical records and ensure compliance with regulations.

– Collaborate with staff to ensure the highest level of patient care.

– Contribute and help with training and mentoring of graduate veterinarians and nurses within the practices

Selection criteria:

– Doctor/Bachelor of Veterinary Science from an accredited institution (recognised in Australia)

– Valid veterinary license with VSB QLD

– Additional qualifications in Equine Medicine and Dentistry will be highly regarded

– More than 4 years of experience in mixed animal practice/equine breeding

– Strong and effective communication and interpersonal skills.

– A passion for mentoring and leading others

– A compassionate attitude toward animals and their owners.

– Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment

– Ability to work strongly within a team environment as well as individually

– Excellent time management and organisational skills

The remuneration package is negotiable, between $55 and $75 per hour, depending on experience. The employers are willing to assist with relocation and accommodation support. This can be negotiated into your remuneration package. There is support for those wanting to pursue continuing education, courses and memberships, with a $2,000 continuing education incentive.

The employer is willing to assist with a work permit (sponsorship) for suitable overseas candidates. Applicants must have a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (or equivalent) and be eligible for registration as a veterinary practitioner in Australia.

The town is renowned for its mining and agricultural resources. It is the largest town in the region and services many of the other local townships, with shopping centres, cinemas, and close proximity to a lake, a gorge, and the beach being only 3 hours away! The location doesn’t seem as rural as it sounds. There is a community of friendly people, many sporting and recreational opportunities and a high number of community events, making this a fantastic place to live.
