A well-established and growing equine practice in northeast Victoria is looking for a passionate equine vet to join their experienced and supportive team. Offering a comprehensive range of medical, surgical and reproductive services, this is a well-equipped practice with a loyal clientele and a great team culture, based in a beautiful part of the world.
The caseload covers both in-clinic and ambulatory work, servicing a varied mix of pleasure and performance horses with some racetrack work also in the mix. This full-time role is centred around a 38-hour week with a flexible roster available, and the focus will be on the general practice component of the clinic. Competency in sport horse medicine and lameness would be highly regarded, and some background in reproduction would be looked upon favourably, though it’s not essential. Both experienced vets and new graduates with a genuine interest in equine work will be considered.
The practice is exceptionally well equipped, with digital radiography, multiple ultrasound machines, portable digital endoscopy, a full in-house laboratory, computer assisted sperm analysis, and a comprehensive range of ambulatory point-of-care diagnostic tools. The large, purpose-built property includes a dedicated lameness area with trot lane, round yard and all-weather arena, covered stocks and crush for medical and reproductive procedures, stables and yards for hospitalisation, and extensive paddock agistment for reproductive and hospital cases.
The remuneration package is generous and discussed commensurate with experience. A fully equipped vehicle and phone are provided for business use, and any hours worked beyond 38 per week are compensated as paid time in lieu. Generous after-hours bonuses are paid for all after-hours calls attended, with after-hours duties structured as one night per week and one weekend in three on call. Annual AVA and EVA membership is included, along with conference fees and 38 hours of paid study leave each year.
The team genuinely enjoy what they do and where they work. It’s a relaxed, respectful and supportive environment with high professional standards, a strong reputation in the region and a loyal, friendly clientele who have been with the practice for years. Work-life balance is taken seriously here, and you’ll have experienced colleagues around you from day one.
The clinic is located just outside Wangaratta, a thriving rural city in northeast Victoria with great sporting, education and retail options. You’re 75 minutes from the snowfields, 45 minutes from the Murray River, and just two and a half hours from Melbourne. The King Valley, Milawa and Rutherglen wine regions are all within easy reach, making this a genuinely wonderful part of the state to live and work.
The employer is willing to assist with a work visa (sponsorship) for suitable experienced overseas candidates. Applicants must have a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (or equivalent) and be eligible for registration as a veterinary practitioner in Australia.
