An exciting opportunity is available for a veterinarian to join a 12-month Emergency and Critical Care Internship Programme in on New Zealand’s North Island.

This role is ideal for a vet with at least 1 year of clinical experience, although the right new graduate will also be considered. There are two positions available, one to start now and the second internship to commence in September/August 2026.

The role is offered on a 5-day rostered week with every second weekend off and veterinary support throughout.

It offers the chance to build real clinical confidence in emergency and critical care within a supportive, specialist-led environment, working alongside experienced ECC veterinarians and a registered Emergency and Critical Care Specialist.

This internship is designed to build strong clinical foundations through hands-on experience, structured support and ongoing mentorship. You will gain immersive exposure to a diverse and challenging emergency and critical care caseload, with a strong focus on clinical reasoning, case discussion and professional growth. There is also the option to rotate through other specialties during the internship, giving you broader exposure while developing your skills in ECC.

Facilities include an IDEXX in-house laboratory, Radiometer blood gas analysis, SmartFlow inpatient management system, digital radiography, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, cone-beam CT, endoscopy, ECG and advanced patient monitoring, along with dedicated surgical and treatment spaces. The team environment is supportive, collaborative and focused on progressive patient care.

As an ECC Intern, you will work in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment and gain confidence managing emergency presentations from admission through stabilisation and inpatient care. You will be involved in the assessment and stabilisation of emergency patients, inpatient monitoring and case management, diagnostics and treatment planning, client communication in emotionally challenging situations, and case reviews with supported clinical decision-making.

This position would suit a motivated, resilient and compassionate veterinarian who is genuinely interested in Emergency and Critical Care, communicates clearly, and enjoys working as part of a close-knit clinical team. Applicants must be able to register their veterinary degree in New Zealand.

The role comes with a salary of $60,000 per annum for the fixed-term internship, APC registration covered, structured supervision, a professional development pathway, direct access to experienced emergency and special interest clinicians, exposure to advanced diagnostics and critical care medicine, a supportive workplace culture, and access to confidential counselling services.

The location offers a great lifestyle with the convenience of a thriving regional city and easy access to some of New Zealand’s most beautiful destinations. You can enjoy green open spaces, river walks, cafes, and a relaxed pace of life, while also being within reach of beaches, hiking areas and popular weekend getaway spots. It is a fantastic place to build your career while enjoying everything the region has to offer.
