LOCATION: North Suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria

TYPE OF WORK: Small Animal (Mix of GP & ECC)

HOURS: Full Time or Part Time

SALARY: Commensurate with experience

JOB NO: 223,364LH2

An independently owned veterinary group in Melbourne’s northern suburbs is seeking an experienced veterinarian to join its team in a role combining small animal general practice with emergency and critical care.

This is a great opportunity for a vet who enjoys the variety of GP work but would also like to develop their emergency skills, with the flexibility to tailor the position to their experience and interests.

The group operates across three clinics, including a 24/7 veterinary hospital and emergency centre.

General practice and emergency clinicians work closely together, providing opportunities to manage an interesting and varied caseload with support from experienced veterinary and nursing teams.

The hospital regularly sees cases involving trauma, foreign bodies, pericardial effusion, toxicities including snake envenomation, oncology and referrals.

This position would suit a veterinarian looking for a supportive environment where they can enjoy clinical variety, develop their skills and work alongside an experienced team, with the flexibility to find a balance between general practice and emergency work that suits their interests.

Facilities include extensive in-house laboratory facilities, ultrasound, endoscopy and comprehensive surgical and hospital facilities. The team also benefits from the support of a Canine Medical Specialist.

The balance between GP and ECC work can be tailored to suit the successful applicant’s interests and experience, whether they prefer an even mix, a greater focus on GP or more ECC work. Depending on the successful applicant’s experience and interests, the role may involve small animal consultations, surgery, dentistry, urgent care and primary emergency consultations. There is also the opportunity to work alongside experienced ECC clinicians and build confidence in managing more complex cases. For vets who prefer general practice, the position can be tailored to have a predominantly GP focus.

The practice offers a competitive, negotiable salary based on experience, skills and the mix of GP and ECC shifts. Other benefits include five weeks of annual leave, annual conference and CPD leave, mentoring from experienced veterinarians and opportunities to further develop clinical skills.

For a full-time position, the roster consists of 76 hours per fortnight across seven shifts, providing seven days off each fortnight. Part-time arrangements can be discussed (2-3 days per week). Shifts include a mix of day, evening and possible overnight shifts for the right applicant.

The ideal candidate will have at least 18 months of general practice experience, current veterinary registration in Victoria and strong communication and client service skills. The team is looking for someone who is compassionate, professional and resilient, with the confidence to work both independently and collaboratively. Enthusiasm, initiative and a willingness to learn are also highly valued.

Previous ECC experience is not essential. A vet with a solid general practice background and an interest in developing their emergency skills will be well supported. Equally, an experienced ECC veterinarian looking to maintain a strong GP component would be welcome.

The practice is located approximately 40 minutes from Melbourne’s CBD. It is located on a tram line and is within easy walking distance of local shops and cafes.
