The Travelling Locum

Have you considered a working holiday in Australia?

Work and holiday
Many vets from Australia and overseas have enjoyed working holiday trips around Australia.  These vets will often follow the work around the country, but also take time off to holiday and explore.

Working in a region can give you a better insight into the area and an opportunity to meet the locals.

Type of work
There is a strong demand for small animal veterinarians with a minimum of two years’ post graduate experience. There is also a demand for mixed/large animal practitioners.

For those vets wanting a lot of dairy/farm work you may wish to consider New Zealand and/or the UK.

Level of experience required
As a minimum, locum vets need to be competent with routine soft tissue surgery, have a good medical knowledge, good communication skills and a minimum of two years’ post graduate experience. Many jobs listed with Vetlink do not require the locum to do high level work such as orthopaedics.

Accommodation
In country areas vets are often supplied with accommodation.  City practices rarely supply accommodation. Low cost accommodation can be found in most areas using websites such as www.airbnb.com.au.
