Recent improvements in locum pay rates means working in the UK can be quite lucrative. While the daily rate ranges from £200 to £280 (approximatelyA$400–560/NZ$430–600), the majority of practices pay between £230 and £250 (A$460–500/NZ$500–540) per day. When you factor in the free accommodation that’s typically provided, you can quickly build up a healthy travel kitty – or make serious inroads towards your savings goals, if that’s what you’d prefer.
Travel opportunities
The British Isles are blessed with diverse landscapes of intense natural beauty and a rich sense of history. Add to that its accessibility to Europe and it’s easy to see why the UK is the perfect base to satisfy your wanderlust.
Weekends off can be spent exploring neighbouring counties for little more than the cost of a hire car and the tariff of a charming B&B. If you’re really lucky, your job might include a vehicle that you can use outside of work hours, giving you even greater freedom to explore.
For something a little further afield, take your pick from the seemingly endless list of low-cost flights departing the UK every day. The ongoing price war between budget airlines like Easyjet and Ryanair shows no sign of slowing down, with UK-based travellers the biggest beneficiaries. Indeed, after checking in at any one of a number of airports dotted around England, you can be enjoying an aperitif in some exotic corner of Europe in less time – and at less cost – than it takes to fly from Melbourne to Brisbane.
To give you an idea of the sort of deals on offer, just this week you could book a flight from London to Moscow for around £130 (A$260/NZ$280) return, leaving you plenty of rubles for a ticket to the Bolshoi ballet or a walking tour around the Red Square and the Kremlin. Or if you’re based out west – in Wales, Devon or Cornwall, for example – you could avoid the journey up to London and instead fly direct from Bristol to Marrakech for £70 (A$140/NZ$150) return. A couple of hours immersed in the chaos and spice-laden aromas of a busy Moroccan souk and the damp English winter will feel like a world away.
Prefer something a little more laid back? There’s always the option of a warm and relaxing package holiday. From the oftentimes chilly Scottish city of Edinburgh, you can book a week’s escape, including airfares and accommodation, to the sunny Greek island of Crete for around £330 (A$660/NZ$715).
