Government Vet Jobs (New and Recent Graduates)

Have you considered a role in Government? To follow are responses to some commonly asked questions.

Q.  Is it a good idea to go into government work as a new/recent graduate?
A. If you have decided clinical work is not for you then the answer is yes. If undecided it is a good idea to give clinical work a try first. Having some clinical experience (a minimum of two years would be ideal) will allow you to more easily return to private practice if you decide government work is not for you.

Q. Is training provided?
A. The jobs we list have well-structured training programs and good ongoing support.

Q. What are my long term career options?
A. There are many roles vets fill in government from entry level food hygiene positions to very senior roles involving market development, policy and negotiation. You may be involved with disease control, market access or research.

Q. Is there a good work/lifestyle balance?
A. The entry level roles and many of the more senior roles offer far better working hours than those offered in private practice.

Q. What attributes do I need to be successful in securing an entry level role?
A. In most cases very good written and verbal communication skills are critical. Many roles involve communicating with a variety of people.

Q. How will my salary compare to graduate salaries in private practice?
A. The entry level salaries compare very favourably to jobs in private practice.
