JOB NO: 213,350JCM

A practice is looking for a full-time veterinarian with at least 1 year of work experience to complement their team to free up time for their head veterinarian to complete non-clinical and administrative tasks due to an increasing workload and a growing pet population locally.

This position will give you the scope to experience the full clinical role of being a veterinarian, without the pressure of making those decisions unsupported. Of course, as you progress in confidence and competence, you will become more comfortable making clinical judgements and decisions on your own, and the team will be there to support that stage, too, and the next stages.

They are a busy, small animal-only practice located on the Western shore of Lake Macquarie.

The ideal candidate will need to have the following:

-A Bachelor of Veterinary Science or equivalent degree.

-At least 1 year of work experience as a veterinarian. Practical clinical experience completed as part of formal veterinary education will be considered.

-Confidence in managing a dynamic and variable caseload of primarily first-opinion medical and surgical cases, though second-opinion medical cases are seen on occasion. There is no expectation of any orthopaedic surgical procedures being performed by the candidate.

-The ability to perform ‘routine’ surgeries such as surgical neutering/desexing on male and female dogs and cats (and rabbits with assistance).

-The ability and/or willingness to learn to perform (with assistance) less routine surgical procedures, including but not limited to skin biopsies, skin and subcutaneous mass removal surgery, exploratory laparotomy for indications such as gastrointestinal foreign body retrieval and/or diagnostic sampling, splenectomy, urinary cystotomy and other intra-abdominal surgical procedures.

-Ability to communicate confidently and consistently with your team of veterinarians and veterinary nurses to ensure effective transfer of information in a timely fashion.

-Ability to keep records of caseloads on the provided practice management software (RxWorks).

-Be a team player with the ability to listen and learn from others while also bringing your own thoughts and perspectives to the treatment of the patients under your care.

-There will also be the expectation of the ability to triage and manage emergency cases as they present, such as dog fights, cat fight wounds, fractures, animals in pain of undefined cause, and injured native wildlife, among other non-routine cases.

-Be eligible to obtain registration with the Veterinary Practitioners Board of New South Wales.

Support and mentorship for all of the above cases will always be available, but they are looking for a self-starter who is confident in managing a dynamic and variable caseload, as well as being a consistent record-keeper and a friendly, professional, trustworthy clinician to their loyal clientele.

They are happy to accommodate the ideal candidate while they get settled in the area and find somewhere to stay long-term.

More About Them:

They are a small animal practice working with dogs and cats almost exclusively (they see the very occasional rabbit, pet rat/mouse, pet bird, backyard chicken, etc). They also see wildlife cases and tend to their needs prior to assessing their suitability to be discharged to a certified wildlife carer.

Their team currently comprises three full-time veterinarians and one part-time veterinarian as well as seven veterinary nurses.

The workload is a mixed caseload of first opinion routine visits for health checks, vaccinations, medication reviews, behavioural consultations, lump assessment, dermatology visits, eye, ear and lameness concerns, internal medicine investigations (e.g. vomiting/diarrhoea, unexplained weight loss, inappetence, urological complaints, ill-thrift etc.).
