Feedback from a 2021 graduate who started at the practice as a new graduate and is still working there:
The whole team are so lovely and highly supportive of new graduates. There is a thorough induction and training process for new graduates, starting with shadowing another vet and progressing gradually. They scheduled it so that I could find my feet and develop my time management. There was (and still is) always someone available to help and for you to ask questions. It really is such a friendly and collaborative work environment. The team is so nice to work with and everyone gets along with everyone.
The practice is well-equipped with everything you need including ultrasound, x-ray, dental x-ray, dental machine and the system we use is really good (RxWorks). There is a mix of clients, with some looking for lower-cost options, so you learn to talk about a whole range of different treatment options from conservative to gold standard. There is also the option to refer with a specialist centre nearby, but we still have the capacity to do most things in-house. We have a mobile specialist surgical service that will come out to do orthopaedics and complex soft tissue procedures.
With surgery, they started me off with the basics and there was always another vet available to scrub in with procedures I hadn’t done before. I never felt like I was pushed into doing a procedure I wasn’t comfortable with. Even now, they try to schedule it so there’s someone around to help if needed and try to organise it so that vets can learn procedures they haven’t done before.
We have separate meetings for vets and nurses once a month, and a monthly meeting for the whole team. There’s a strong focus on professional development, with journal club, lots of informal CPD, access to VIN (there’s lots of free courses on there), and a yearly allowance for formal education which is usually enough for a workshop or distance education course. We also develop our own standards of care if we see a lot of cases where we don’t already have a set protocol. We will allocate ourselves a condition, do our own research, write the protocol ourselves and then have others look over it. Our lead vet will do the final edit and then these are shared on our public drive.
We also have regular social events throughout the year and do something every year for Christmas too. Most recently, a couple of weeks before Christmas, the practice owners booked a house and we went away together which was really nice. We played some games and got to relax!
